Day 1- Great Glen Way - Glairlochy to Laggan - where is Lizzie?

June 19-Finally starting on the Great Glen Way. To save some time, decided not to go all the way to Fort William on the East Highland Way, since would be backtracking to Gairlochy, so had to walk the 3 miles over from Spaen Bridge. Walked by the Commando Memorial - there was also a Commando Museum in the Milton Hotel where I stayed last night. Today I also saw several points related to Commandos - turns out this area of Scotland was used for commando training during World War II. It appears as though it is still used for military training, as a military jet flew down Loch Lochy at about 200 feet above the Loch - scared me to death.

The walk over to The Caledonian Canal was uneventful, except had to stay out of the way of traffic on the “”B” roads.

Was fortunate that a sail boat was coming through the lock as I approached, so got to see the bridge open as it sailed through.

Loch Lochy is the third deepest lochs and is said to be where Lizzie, Nessie’s cousin lives.

The walk went through beautiful forest areas with lots of water falls.

Saw several other hikers today, one of which was hiking with a three legged dog. Today that dog would hike 8 miles - when it had 4 legs it was known to hike as much as 30 miles.

The Laggan Locks were at the end of the water and then hiked the last mile to the Great Glen Hostel along an “A” road which was truly scary - fast moving traffic and nowhere to stand.

The weather today was beautiful and sunny.
